WELLS FARGO DONATES $250,000 TO NATIONAL PARK FOUNDATION
Donation supports mission to protect national parks, connect people
to them, and inspire a new generation of Americans to enjoy nature and
lead an active lifestyle
In recognition of the 100th anniversary of the National Park
Service, Wells Fargo today announced a $250,000 donation to the National
Park Foundation, the official charity of America’s national parks, continuing
its tradition of support for national parks which can be traced back to
the 1860s.
Wells Fargo’s grant will support the Foundation’s mission to protect
America’s parks and connect youth and families to them, inspiring a new
generation of Americans to enjoy the natural, historical, and cultural
wonders of our national parks, as well as to develop an appreciation for
conservation and active lifestyles.
“It is because of supporters like Wells Fargo that we are able to help
more people discover their unique connections to our incredibly diverse
National Park System,” said Stefanie Mathew, vice president of corporate
partnerships at the National Park Foundation. “As we kick off the next
century of the National Park Service’s critical work, we couldn’t be
more pleased to have Wells Fargo’s support.”
The National Park Service hosted a record 307 million visitors in 2015
and recently celebrated the addition of its 411th national
park. In addition to preserving the moments, landscapes, places, and
stories that make up America’s diverse history, national parks create
local jobs, encourage active lifestyles, and protect valuable local
ecosystems. The National Park Foundation, chartered by Congress in 1967,
helps protect and preserve national parks through private support,
safeguarding our heritage and inspiring the next generation of national
park stewards. The National Park Foundation also helps the National Park
Service address mounting environmental challenges and enriches America’s
parks and programs.
“Wells Fargo is deeply committed to preserving the beauty of our natural
environment for current and future generations to enjoy,” said Jon
Campbell, head of Government and Community Relations at Wells Fargo.
“We’re proud to support the National Park Foundation’s mission to
inspire the next generation of park stewards, while strengthening our
local communities with rewarding jobs that help preserve our national
culture and historic treasures.”
Wells Fargo has a long history of involvement with the National Park
Service, which includes a former Wells Fargo express agent and
politician whose legislation helped lead the creation of Yosemite
National Park in California. In 1864, California Senator and former
Wells Fargo express agent John Conness introduced legislation to
preserve Yosemite Valley and Mariposa Grove of Big Trees for future
generations. President Lincoln signed the Yosemite Grant into law,
marking the beginning of California’s State Parks system and preserving
land that eventually became part of Yosemite National Park in 1892.
Before serving in the U.S. Senate, Conness was Wells Fargo’s express
agent in the gold rush town of Georgetown, California. Mount Conness in
Yosemite National Park is named in his honor.
